Foundation supporter donates yacht to Coast Guard Academy
Long-time Coast Guard Foundation supporter W. Hall Wendel, Jr donated his 42-foot Hinckley Sou’wester ‘Integrity’ for use in the Coast Guard Academy’s Coastal Sail Training Program.
The yacht was donated in honor of his friend and mentor the Honorable G. William Miller. Secretary Miller was a founding director of the Coast Guard Foundation, a Coast Guard Academy alumnus, and served as Federal Reserve Chairman and Treasury Secretary during the President Jimmy Carter administration.
This is the third boat donated by Mr Wendel to the Academy’s waterfront program and sailing team. The Coastal Sail Training Program runs all summer long at the Academy in New London, Connecticut, providing cadets the opportunity to apply hands-on training to the navigation, sailing, seamanship, and small boat operation skills learned in the classroom.
“We would like to thank Mr Wendel for his generous donation and ongoing support of the Academy’s sailing program,” said Anne B. Brengle, president of the Coast Guard Foundation. “This vessel is an incredible addition to the sailing program and will play a major role in providing the skills that enable cadets to strengthen their service to our nation.”
The Coast Guard Foundation accepts donated sail and powerboats for use in Academy’s waterfront programs which include on-the-water training activities, college sailing competitions, and long-distance ocean racing programs. The Foundation also provides donated boats to the Coast Guard Auxiliary for safety patrols and Coast Guard morale boats.
