U.S. Coast Guard Los Angeles-Long Beach: Serving America's Busiest Port Complex

U.S. Coast Guard members assigned to Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach carry out some of the most critical maritime safety and security activities in the nation. In addition to working in the port, Coast Guard personnel oversee the nearly 3,800 square miles of ocean surrounding it, protecting everything from commercial shipping lanes to recreational waterways.

Their comprehensive mission includes:

  • Port security operations for LA/LB harbors
  • Environmental protection and marine safety
  • Search and rescue across Southern California waters
  • Drug interdiction and border security

Coast Guard Los Angeles-Long Beach personnel work to ensure safe passage of billions of dollars in cargo while maintaining the highest security standards. Members conduct vessel boardings, escort high-interest vessels, and provide rapid response capabilities that keep America's supply chain flowing smoothly.

Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach: Economic Powerhouse of the Pacific Coast

The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach collectively form the San Pedro Bay Port Complex – the busiest container port complex in the Western Hemisphere and a cornerstone of American international trade.

Key Port Statistics:

  • Handle approximately 40% of all U.S. containerized imports
  • Support over 2.8 million jobs across the United States
  • Generate more than $180 billion in annual trade value
  • Process over 17 million TEUs (twenty-foot container equivalent units) annually

From smartphones to automobiles, everyday items pass through these ports before reaching American consumers. The ports support crucial supply chains for industries ranging from automotive manufacturing to agricultural exports, making Coast Guard safety and security activities essential to America’s economic stability.

We are excited to be back in Southern California for another patriotic evening. Last year’s reception was more than just an inspiring Coast Guard appreciation event; it was an opportunity for the Southern California maritime and business communities to network and engage each other and the Coast Guard on important local maritime issues
