The Coast Guard Foundation offers merit scholarships to the children of Coast Guard members that reduce student loan debt and allow them to focus on their studies. For children of fallen Coast Guard members, we offer scholarships that cover all the expenses of higher education. This investment gives families relief and honors their heroism.

This year, we awarded 168 new scholarships totaling $550,000 in support for the 2022 – 2023 academic year. Since the program’s inception in 1990, the Foundation has awarded more than $6 million in scholarships ensuring Coast Guard children can build strong futures through a college education or technical school training.

Avans Leon Gallardo Williams Collage

Jasmine Avans is a 2022 graduate of Arundel High School in Grambrils, Md., and is enrolled at Bowie State University where she will major in business management with a goal to lead her own business upon graduation. She is the daughter of retired Coast Guard veteran Tameka Avans.

“This is only the beginning,” shared Jasmine. “Being a recipient of the Coast Guard Foundation Scholarship will play a huge part in my becoming a young business owner. Thank you for this opportunity.”

Fabiola Leon Gallardo is a rising senior at Louisiana State University, after graduating from Fort Pierce High School in Florida. She is studying mass communication with a concentration in public relations. She is the daughter of Chief Petty Officer Joneric Santos. She received the CAPT James F. Phair, USCG ,Memorial Scholarship

“Thank you for supporting my dreams,” shared Fabiola. “This scholarship will aid me while pursuing my career goals, but also easing the burden of having to pay for this higher education. Being selected brings a great amount of joy to me and my family and makes me feel supported as a college student. Thank you for your generosity.”

Ashley Williams graduated from Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego this year and is headed to Texas Tech University to study biology on a pre-med track, with a goal of serving as a trauma surgeon in the military. She is the daughter of Petty Officer 1st Class David Williams, USCG Reserve.

James Burgess is a three-year Coast Guard Foundation scholarship recipient and is a rising junior at Texas State University where he is studying electrical engineering. At Texas State, he volunteers with Bobcat Build to complete community service projects that include things like landscaping, painting, and clean-ups at residents’ homes, local schools, parks, churches, and neighborhoods. He is the son of retired Coast Guard veteran Evan Burgess.

Nathan Otero is a four-year Coast Guard Foundation scholarship recipient and will graduate from Wichita State University in 2023 with a degree in mechanical engineering. After graduation he will continue his education with the goal of earning a PhD while putting his skills and education to effective use in a professional setting. He is the son of retired Coast Guard veteran Andrew Otero.

“The Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Foundation have both been essential in my success throughout the years,” wrote Nathan. “They have allowed me to pursue my dreams. This scholarship helps me attend school at a price that is affordable for me and my family.”

Eric Smith graduated from Franklin High School in Tennessee and is enrolling at the University of Alabama this fall where he plans to study finance. He is the son of retired Coast Guard veteran Joseph E Smith. Upon completing his degree, he plans to apply to the Coast Guard’s Officer Candidate School to earn his commission in the service. Eric received the William Cargill Scholarship.
