Leadership 44 Campaign

The Coast Guard Foundation and the Leadership 44 Campaign

The Coast Guard Foundation is partnering with the United States Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association to raise funds for a new class of leadership sail training vessels for the Coast Guard Academy.

Putting cadets under sail is the best way to teach future maritime officers the ways of the sea and acquire a love for its lore.  Under sail, the future officer gains a greater appreciation and respect for the wind, waves and tides.

Sailing craft also provides cadets a valuable leadership experience- often their first experience at command and control at sea.  A ship under sail tests the true character of a young officer and provides invaluable lessons on the importance of teamwork.

The Leadership 44 fundraising campaign will:
  • Serve as the first campaign involving all United States Coast Guard Academy stakeholders to meet one of the Academy Superintendent’s top priorities;
  • Be designed to serve as a floating leadership classroom, providing cadets a maritime experience that is difficult to recreate with large cutters;
  • Function as the primary platform for the 2/c Coastal Sail Training Program; considered by most cadets to be their seminal leadership experience while at the Academy;
  • Provide all cadets with small craft command and control, navigation, and seamanship experiences;
  • Operate as an extension of the cadet barracks, with each company having access to, and responsibility for, its own boat;
  • Extend the waterfront season, providing cadets more time underway and the standardization of the off-shore sailing program;
  • Showcase the Academy as one of the premier waterfront facilities in the country.
The Design
The CGA Leadership 44 is a pure sail training vessel. Every aspect is optimized to enhance the training experience. A procurement committee, representing the interests of the Academy, the Coast Guard Foundation, the Alumni Association and the Parents Association, worked with naval architect David Pedrick to develop a set of CGA specific plans and specifications, which were approved by the Superintendent. The resulting design is a boat with contemporary lines, simplified rig, and an improved sail plan that will meet the rigorous demands of the Coastal Sail Training Program and give the Academy excellent performance for years to come.

The Naval Architect
David Pedrick of Newport, RI, designed the Leadership 44s. He is an internationally renowned naval architect, who has led the design teams on eight America’s Cup campaigns and produced two winners – Courageous in 1974 and Stars and Stripes in 1987. His work embodies the very best technical designs in the market today. In early March, he was selected to be the Technical Director for the development of the new America’s Cup AC33 class, indicative of the high regard with which he is held in the international design community.

The Builder
Morris Yachts of Trenton, ME, has been chosen to build the Leadership 44s. Since its founding in 1972, Morris Yachts has grown steadily over the years, building a range of semi-custom finished sail and powerboats. Customer pride and satisfaction have been a primary factor in their growth and success. Today, Morris yachts range in size from 29 to 62 feet. As the business has grown, so have the services and facilities. The family business has expanded into a complete yacht service organization, including brokerage, indoor heated storage, and custom yacht construction. The new main construction facility provides a state-of-the-art venue, designed and laid out to optimize work efficiency.

This exciting initiative aims to build up to eight boats for the Coast Guard Academy.  Interested donors should contact the Coast Guard Foundation at (860) 535-0786 or email Anne Brengle, President, at abrengle@cgfdn.org or Lisa Reed, Vice President of Individual Giving at lreed@cgfdn.org.
