FAQ
Why are private funds needed for a government organization?
The federal government provides basics for the Academy and Coast Guard, but it cannot by law, or will not, because of budget constraints, provide funds to fully satisfy many of the education and quality of life needs critical to operational success.
Coast Guard family members, especially those in remote locations, often face challenging conditions and demanding jobs.
The issue of Academy support is more complex. How can it attract America’s best and brightest when federal support is not sufficient to fund opportunities and programs routinely available at other colleges? There is fierce competition for qualified high school graduates who will become the Coast Guard’s future leaders. The Foundation strives to provide a margin of excellence for the Academy — indeed, for the entire Coast Guard — by helping to bridge the gap between its operating budget and educational superiority.
Is the Foundation a military organization?
No. We are a non-profit organization with a small civilian staff and volunteer board of directors from a wide range of backgrounds, including military service. We work closely with the Coast Guard on all issues concerning the projects and programs we originate or help to support.
Are contributions to the Foundation tax deductible?
Yes. We operate in accordance with section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Foundation is the Coast Guard’s official vehicle for accepting and soliciting tax deductible gifts to benefit the Coast Guard and its Academy.
Are Foundation events open to the public?
The public is invited to most events, such as our golf tournaments and tribute dinners. Other events have limited attendance and are by invitation only. Contact the Foundation for information about specific events.
