Chelsie Layman

The Hugh and Carole Westbrook Scholarships are one-time $2,500 awards for students who have displayed strong character and good conduct. Chelsie Layman, a 2010 Westbrook Scholar, moved four times in the four years during her high school years, all while taking care of her autistic twin brothers since both of her parents work.

"While Chelsie might be interested in extracurricular activities that her high school experience would normally provide for her, such as student council and peer mentoring, Chelsie must take on the responsibility of a student and a parent," said Lisa Dennis, Chelsie's high school English teacher, in her recommendation for the scholarship. "In light of these circumstances, I find it inspiring how committed Chelsie is to maximizing her education."

Chelsie acknowledged the difficulty of moving so many times during her formative high school years in her application to the Foundation.

"The past four years have proved to be extremely difficult not only because of high school in general, but because of moving four times in those four years," she wrote. "Being the most important years in shaping who I am, they have tested me more than I could have ever imagined."
