Coast Guard Foundation
The Coast Guard Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1969. It was initially created to provide funds for academic, athletic, and morale needs of the Coast Guard Academy and its cadets which were not covered by federal operational funding. In 1986, the Foundation expanded its charter to support projects that enhance the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families. The Foundation is governed by a Board of 100 Trustees from all parts of the country. The Trustees elect from their members a 30 person Board of Directors to oversee the management of the Foundation. Located in Stonington, Connecticut, the Foundation employs a staff of ten civilians responsible for meeting the Foundation’s objectives and working closely with the Coast Guard on all issues.
Max’s generosity to the Coast Guard Foundation is eclipsed only by his love and dedication. His support during his 10 years as a member of the Board of Directors made a difference in the lives of Coast Guard men and women and their families every day. He supports educational programs for enlisted personnel and their families, “Books for Boats” and a myriad of other projects. Max also traveled the country to participate in Coast Guard Foundation events to honoring the service men and women he holds so dear.
The letter nominating Max to serve on the Coast Guard Foundation Board of Directors said in part, “[he is] a stellar American and strong supporter of the Coast Guard”. We at the Foundation are honored that Max became a strong supporter of the Coast Guard Foundation as well.
Max is survived by wife, Judith; children, Hope Wilkos of Boynton Beach, FL, Cindy (Robert) Wodrich of Tampa, FL, Max (Maria) Solomon III of Hollywood, FL; and grand- children, Sean Wodrich, Melody and Madeline Solomon. He was predeceased by his brother, Edward L. Solomon, Jr. Max had a long and rewarding career with the railroad, retiring as District Superintendent of Norfolk Southern, which culminated with the distinguished honor of having a Control Point in East Pitt named after him (CP Solomon).
