It is with great sadness that we report our dear friend and board member, Max Solomon II, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2010.  Max began his service on the Coast Guard Foundation’s Board of Director’s on January 1, 2000 and was re-elected to another consecutive 3-year term in November, 2009.  During his tenure on the Board Max served on the Executive Committee and provided strong leadership and direction for the Foundation.

Max’s generosity to the Coast Guard Foundation is eclipsed only by his love and dedication.  His support during his 10 years as a member of the Board of Directors made a difference in the lives of Coast Guard men and women and their families every day.   He supports educational programs for enlisted personnel and their families, “Books for Boats” and a myriad of other projects.   Max also traveled the country to participate in Coast Guard Foundation events to honoring the service men and women he holds so dear.

The letter nominating Max to serve on the Coast Guard Foundation Board of Directors said in part,  “[he is] a stellar American and strong supporter of the Coast Guard”.  We at the Foundation are honored that Max became a strong supporter of the Coast Guard Foundation as well.

Max is survived by wife, Judith; children, Hope Wilkos of Boynton Beach, FL, Cindy (Robert) Wodrich of Tampa, FL, Max (Maria) Solomon III of Hollywood, FL; and grand- children, Sean Wodrich, Melody and Madeline Solomon. He was predeceased by his brother, Edward L. Solomon, Jr. Max had a long and rewarding career with the railroad, retiring as District Superintendent of Norfolk Southern, which culminated with the distinguished honor of having a Control Point in East Pitt named after him (CP Solomon).

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Coast Guard Foundation, 394 Taugwonk Rd, Stonington, CT 06378; or Alley Cat Allies, 7920 Norfolk Ave, Ste 600, Bethesda, MD 20814.
