Coast Guard Foundation Announces Challenge Gift to Raise Funds for the Fallen Heroes ScholarshipLast September the Coast Guard family suffered a tremendous loss. In a terrible tragedy off the coast of Hawaii, the Coast Guard lost four men in a helicopter accident. With the support of hundreds of generous individuals, families and corporations, the Coast Guard Foundation was able to help immediately the families of these heroes get through this difficult time.
In order to honor those who make the ultimate sacrifice, the Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund was established in 2005 to provide college scholarships to the children of Coast Guard men and women who die in the line of duty. Unfortunately, due to this most recent tragedy, the need for the Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund has greatly increased.
In response to this great need, an anonymous family has stepped forward and made a $100,000 challenge gift to the Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund. Any gift of $100 or more will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000.This means if you send a tax-deductible gift of $100, $500, $1,000 or $10,000, they will double it! This is a special chance for your gift to double the impact on the life of a child.
Each one of these children has their own personal goals. Some are bold, like becoming the next graduate of a top institution. Some are groundbreaking, such as the child who is the first in her family to attend college. Please join the Foundation in helping these children accomplish their dreams of a college education.
The Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund benefits families of Coast Guard personnel who die in the line of duty. This is the first fund established for supporting the higher education needs of families whose loved one makes the ultimate sacrifice. The Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund was established by John and Delinda Statts in memory of John’s parents, Captain Frederick Statts and his wife, Sara. Unfortunately, in September 2008, the Coast Guard lost four men in a helicopter accident off the coast of Hawaii. Tragically, there are eight children, all of which are in college or are approaching college age, that are now left without fathers and are eligible for the Fallen Heroes Scholarship. We currently support two dependents through this scholarship program; in addition to the eight children surviving the crew of CG-6505, there are several more children who will be approaching college age in the future.
